Rubens, Peter Paul. Daniel in the Lion’s Den. 1615. National Gallery Of Art. Washington, DC.
Baroque:
The Baroque movement was a style that combines dramatic compositions, beautiful details, and emotionally charged subject matter to give viewers as intense a visual experience as possible. The baroque movement began in Italy, in the 17th century. Baroque paintings are mostly found in churches and cathedrals (Empty easel). Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish baroque painter, born on June 28, 1577, in Siegen, Germany. He emphasized movement, color, and sensuality. Many of his paintings are portrayed in a dark style, with a lot of details shown. He is well-known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. One of Rubens famous paintings is Daniel in the Lion’s Den, created in 1615. In this painting he uses detail and color, to make the painting look realistic. Daniel is shown with emotion, as he prays to God. Rubens uses these features, to connect with those who view the painting (PeterPaulRubens.org).
